Understanding Suffering, Developing Compassion.

Introduction.

Buddhism can be seen as the Way on which one develops Wisdom & Compassion.

... i think that the important part of Wisdom development is understanding suffering, not only theoretically but also by experience.

Suffering can take many forms, from poverty to loneliness, to physical or mental illness.

... i think that those who do not understand poverty do not see need to share, do not understand Dana.

... it's also the Buddhist truth that 'karma returns', that we'll be sooner or later experiencing our good deeds and bad deeds returning to us.

Every of our actions on Mind, Speech and Body levels seeds karma for our future.

In Buddhism, Compassion should extend not only to others, but also to oneself. Without including oneself in an act of compassion, compassion is stupid and not complete.

Blog author's experience.

Today i've shared 20 PLN with an old woman who begged on the streets, she asked for mere 0,05 PLN.

... 20 PLN is not small amount for me - it's about the price of a good meal, or many, many, many of poorer meals - and i do not tell this to brag, but to make people understand, that one can give or help in small ways as well.

She told me to: 'Go with God'.

i've explained that i am Buddhist, but i also respect / Catholic / Church.

She asked me: 'Will you go with God?'

... i've answered: 'Yes, but not fully'.

She thanked me for that.

Church's wisdom is: 'do not do to others what you do not like for yourself', but abstaining from doing harm is often not enough, i think.

i think one needs to alleviate harm, and to protect against harm, as well.

... i think we Buddhists do not want to give others impression that 'we are so developed that we don't understand problems of a common man or woman'.

... i think that understanding suffering can be an answer to a question: 'How to practice Compassion?'

That way, as Wisdom about suffering is developed, one can more skilfully practice Compassion - the first part of the Four Immeasurables Practice.

... i think that people who wish others harm 'should learn', should understand suffering they are putting others into - not only theoretically but also by experience.

... how to give 'bad people' such lessons in a beneficial way?

... how to avoid anger, hate, revenge?

Deep Wisdom, Simplicty & Compassion that Shines on many Levels.

About.

There are Wisdom Lessons coming from Lamas & Buddhas, there are Wisdom Lessons of Catholic Church & of Spiritual Minorities.

There are those who wish to learn in the Sincere Way, to be beneficial, to support, to inspire themselves & other beings.

These people rise Spiritually as time progress.

Yet there are those who learn lessons in a superficial way, as is optimal for their gains & needs, with least amount of effort from themselves.

There are people who explain that they are allowed to abuse others, to gain benefits just because they are going to church regularly, or just because they meditate while others don't or can't.

These people often justify their weakness, their egoism & laziness with 'greater good', as well as with need to feed their families.

These people are becoming more corrupt as time progress.

Many beings are beneficial & supporting even that they have families, having family & worldly needs should not be excuse for spiritual degradation, egoism & laziness.

i respect people who keep foundations of their spiritual practices for whole life, who keep simple wisdoms & compassion that they understand ever deeper.

i respect people whose wisdoms are not detached from purest of foundations, so simple that can be explained both for kids, as well as for adults.

i call such lessons as 'shining wisdom & compassion on many levels', with each of deeper levels of understanding still being true, compassionate & wise.

Wishes.

i wish to learn, understand deeply & share spiritual lessons that are shining wisdom & compassion on many levels.

i wish others wishing for that to be able to do so as well.

May all beings have happines and causes of happiness,

May they be free from suffering and the cause of suffering,

May they always experience true happiness, which is totally free from suffering,

May they remain in the great equanimity, which is beyond attachment and aversion.

Wisdom & Compassion.

Introduction.

Development of Wisdom & Compassion leads to Enlightenment on the Great Way of Buddhism.

Five Disturbing emotions: Sources of Wisdom.

'Disturbing emotions (Skt. Klesha / Tib. Nyön mong): also called: 'mental states that bring about suffering.'

These states are: ignorance, attachment, anger, pride and envy.

Together with negative actions, they form the causes for all suffering in the cycle of existence (Skt. Samsara).'

-- Quoted from 'Buddha & Love' by Lama Ole Nydahl.

Five Wisdoms.

'Wisdoms, Five: the five wisdoms are the true essence of the five disturbing emotions.

Through the conversion of ordinary experience, anger is recognized as a mirror-like state, showing the way things are without adding or subtracting anything (Mirror-like Wisdom).

Pride becomes the ability to see all things as richness (Equalizing Wisdom).

Atachment converts into the capacity to distinguish things in their details and how they work together (Discriminating Wisdom).

Envy converts itself into the ability to connect experiences as steps in a historical process (Wisdom of Experience),

and ignorance becomes all-pervading insight (All Pervading Wisdom).'

-- Quoted from 'Buddha & Love' by Lama Ole Nydahl.

Compassion.

'Compassion (Skt. Karuna / Tib. Nyingje): the second of the Four Immeasurables, the wish that all living beings may be free from suffering and the causes of suffering'.

-- Quoted from 'Buddha & Love' by Lama Ole Nydahl.

Great Way.

'Great Way (Tibetan: Thegchen, Sanskrit: Mahayana): The way of the bodhisattvas where one strives for enlightenment for the benefit of all beings.

Compassion and wisdom are deepened through study, analysis, and meditation over a long time, and then open out into insight.'

-- Quoted from 'The Way Things Are' by Lama Ole Nydahl.

Loving Eyes Mantra.

Disturbing emotions can be purified using Loving Eyes Mantra, using other ways as well.

After being purfied, disturbing emotions emerge as wisdoms.

The Loving Eyes Mantra: OM MANI PEME HUNG.

The underlying meaning of the mantra is as follows:

OM - purifies all harmful impressions that have been caused by pride and protects against rebirths as worldly gods

MA - purifies all harmful impressions that have been caused by envy and jealousy and protects against rebirths as jealous half-gods

NI - purifies all harmful impressions that have been caused by attachment and desire and protects against human rebirth (except as a Bodhisattva)

PE - purifies all harmful impressions that have been caused by ignorance and protects against rebirth as animals

ME - purifies all harmful impressions that have been caused by greed and stinginess and protects against rebirths as hungry ghosts

HUNG - purifies all harmful impressions that have been caused by anger and hatred and protects against paranoia-hell states

The literal translation is:

OM: Space awaken!

MANI PEME: Diamond in the Lotus Flower (which is the name of Buddha and invokes his power)

HUNG: Be Strong!

-- Quoted from 'Buddha & Love' by Lama Ole Nydahl & paraphrased from Buddhist sources.

Blog's author's comments.

i heard during a buddhist lecture, read as well, that development of Wisdom & Compassion is the Way to Enlightenment.

It's the Great Way (Mahayana) method, but i think that Diamond Way (Vayrajana) uses this as well.

After developing enough of Compassion one should develop Wisdom.

After developing enough of Wisdom one should develop Compassion.

i think that with Wisdom developed, one can help more beings more in a shorter time as well.

One should keep developing Wisdom & Compassion in turns, until Enlightenment is achieved.
